Imagine stepping into a class where everyone feels secure and excited to learn – that’s how a really good environment feels. Teachers, school leaders, and education newcomers, even, do not have to do anything drastic; they can simply adopt a few habits to help students thrive. Having a good classroom environment makes students more focused and happy.

Daily Habits for a Positive Classroom Environment
Here are some tips that will help you make a good environment to help students feel more welcome in class:
Start with a Warm Welcome
- When you arrive at class, greet students with a genuine smile. Wave hi to them as they walk through the door.
- This small gesture can help everyone feel welcomed.
- Even the shyest of students will feel welcomed once they start frequenting the class.
Create Simple and Easy to Follow Guidelines
- At the start of class, share with students 3 to 4 simple rules. For example, “Listen when others speak” and “Help a friend in need” are really great rules you can start with! Have them displayed in class somewhere and refer to them as the day goes on.
- Setting clear rules helps churn out confusion. Kids know how long each activity will take and what to expect next.
- This helps kids learn more because their time isn’t wasted, as teachers motivate kids to do their best and master their skills.
Be the Role Model They Need
- Modelling shows kindness, patience, and enthusiasm while controlling and managing the classroom.
- Keeping cool and celebrating student wins, even if small, will motivate students to mirror and shape the respected environment.
- This helps teach students how to care and treat people how to treat people, and what respect is.
Encourage Open, Kind Conversations
- Emotional safety is the best safety. This is because people, including students, feel free to ask questions. People begin to feel more comfortable sharing their ideas and struggles.
- Wherever there is genuine emotion and care, there is an incredible level of safety.
- Conversations create a genuine, warm, safe environment for students to share struggles and ideas.
Confidence and Joy in the Classroom
- Reinforcement of the right behaviours is a clear motivator of the changes you want to see. Positive behaviours are the right path people want to see and support.
- Celebrating wins, be they small or large, is as easy as a thumbs up or a shout out. The more people positively reward each other, the more confidence people will have and the more they will want to do it.
For Students to Feel Comfortable
- Encourage students to talk to each other by rearranging desks in a circle, and set up a quiet reading corner with some cushions to make it more inviting.
- Use walls to display student work, and cover them with posters showing each subject’s goals.
- When students see a space designed with thought and care, they gain a sense of ownership.
- Surrounding kids with good design elements increases comfort and engagement.
Make Mistakes, Not a Problem.
- When disruptions happen, instead of getting upset, say something like, “We can do this together.”
- Create a classroom where students see mistakes as something to learn from, and give students opportunities to demonstrate their classroom focus.
